[TV Review] Power Hour – 1.26.91

powerhour

Commentators: Jim Ross & Paul E. Dangerously

Power Hour starts of WCW’s weekend of shows by re-airing a bunch of stuff from the past two weeks of Pro. Back then it made sense as Pro didn’t air everywhere and Power Hour was on TBS. Watching it now, however…different story.

The Lineup

  • Minotaur vs. Keith Hart (Pro – 1.19.91)
  • The Master Blasters vs. Tim Parker & Scott Allen (Pro – 1.19.91)
  • Rick Steiner vs. Mike Samples (Pro – 1.19.91)
  • Wrestling News Network w/ Gordon Solie
  • Brian Pillman vs. Lt. James Earl Wright (Pro – 1.19.91)
  • Terry Taylor vs. Joe Barrett (Pro – 1.19.91)
  • Tom Zenk (c) vs. Moondog Rex for the WCW TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP (Pro – 1.12.91)

*****

Minotaur vs. Keith Hart
Match already happened last week on Pro. Still fun to watch though as Keith Hart actually makes Minotaur semi-fun to watch, plus Minotaur moves a little quicker than he did in his debut which is a welcome change. Minotaur wins with a lariat using his leather-clad arm. (2:58)

  • Final Rating: FUN SQUASH

The Master Blasters vs. Tim ‘Powerhouse’ Parker & Scott Allen
This match also happened last week on Pro. Master Blasters win with their lame ass double shoulderblock. (2:25)

  • Final Rating: SQUASH

Rick Steiner vs. Mike Samples
Yup, a Pro match again. Steiner wins with the middle buckle release overhead belly-to-belly suplex he’s fond of using. Master Blasters try to charge the ring at some point but hold each other back so nothing really happens there. Dangerously mentions that the location of Dixie Dynamite has been changed to some random Georgia town. This happened due to ‘security concerns’ about holding an event in the CNN Center Atrium during war time (Desert Storm). (2:47)

  • Final Rating: SQUASH

Wrestling News Network w/ Gordon Solie
Solie focuses first on the TV Title situation, segueing to footage of Bobby Eaton‘s attack on The Z-Man during last week’s WCW telecast. Z-Man cuts a green screen promo vowing to give Eaton a ‘beatin’, accidentally rhyming his threat. Solie switches gears to the Arm Wrestling match scheduled for Dixie Dynamite with the training videos of both Missy Hyatt and Paul E. Dangerously shown. Hyatt is taking it seriously and actually working out, Dangerously just talks a bunch while sitting in a gym. Dangerously joins Solie and says he doesn’t need to prepare that much to beat a ‘woman’ in an Arm Wrestling contest. Solie wonders if Dangerously’s ‘verbal pomposity’ will last. Gordon Solie is all class all the time.

Ross and Dangerously segue into the post-title win footage of Ric Flair getting in Scott Steiner‘s face backstage at the Meadowlands.

‘Flyin’ Brian Pillman vs. Lt. James Earl Wright
Seriously this is just a repurposed episode of Pro, what the hell. This match isn’t bad though as Pillman overcomes both Wright and his State Patrol buddy Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker to get the win. State Patrol try to beat Pillman up after but Pillman easily fights them off. (6:18)

  • Final Rating: **

Dangerously says he’s going to continue stirring the pot between Terry Taylor and Ricky Morton tonight. Cut to footage of Dangerously’s interview with Taylor during last week’s episode of WCW.

Terry Taylor vs. Joe Barrett
Guess which show this already aired on? Ha. Alexandra York shows up at ringside during the match, Dangerously says that in a month York won’t be here because Donald Trump is going to hire her but also says she’s out here scouting new members for her Foundation. Which is it? (4:04)

  • Final Rating: *1/2

WCW Television Championship
‘The Z-Man’ Tom Zenk (c) vs. Moondog Rex
This match aired on Pro two weeks ago as Zenk’s second title defense. Z-Man wins with the Missile Dropkick. Yay? (5:46)

  • Final Rating: *3/4

Ross hypes tonight’s episode of WCW as Scott Steiner will be in singles action. Dangerously doesn’t like Steiner’s chances at Dixie Dynamite.

*****

Final Thoughts: Given that Pro only aired in Chicago and New York I totally understand that recycling this footage for one of their three nationally-aired shows on TBS was probably not a huge deal back then. Those outside of those two markets probably didn’t know this was all recycled from previously-aired television. However given that I’m watching every damn TV episode this episode of Power Hour bored me to tears. At least it made for a quick watch and review though. I could pump these out all day.
