[TV Rundown] ‘Pro Chicago’ 07.06.1991 – MAJOR WCW SHAKE-UP, Also Squash Matches I Guess

COMMENTATORS: Tony Schiavone & “The Living Legend” Larry Zbyszko

This week’s Pro features Steve Austin, The Diamond Studd, and others in action plus a Larry Z’s Legends with Johnny B. Badd and oh yeah AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT RIC FLAIR IS GONE FROM WCW AND THE WORLD TITLE HAS BEEN VACATED. Maybe I should’ve led with that.

  • WCW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPION: “Stunning” Steve Austin
  • WCW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: The Steiner Brothers (Rick & Scott Steiner)
  • WCW UNITED STATES TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes & Jimmy “Jam” Garvin)
  • WCW WORLD SIX MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes, Jimmy “Jam” Garvin, & Badstreet)

  • Steve Austin vs. Kerry Booth
  • The York Foundation vs. Larry Santo, Jim Boss, & Greg Sawyer
  • The Hardliners vs. Pat Rose & Eddie Desmond
  • BRICKHOUSE BONUS w/ Jack Brickhouse
  • One Man Gang vs. John Peterson
  • VIDEO: A special look at Lex Luger
  • Big Josh & Tom Zenk vs. Mark Kyle & Tim Frye
  • LARRY Z’S LEGENDS w/ Larry Zbyszko, Johnny B. Badd, & Theodore R. Long
  • The Diamond Studd vs. Scotty Williams
  • INTERVIEW: Schiavone w/ Missy Hyatt
  • Bobby Eaton vs. Allen Martin (?)

-CLIP: Nikita Koloff accidentally hits Sting with the Russian Chain/Sting & Koloff brawl backstage and into the parking lot (SuperBrawl – 05.19.1991); Koloff attacks Sting before a scheduled ten-man tag team match (I forget which show, they all run together)

-Schiavone and Zbyszko come to us remote in the Chicago streets and talk about pro wrestling’s history in this great city.

“Stunning” Steve Austin [w/ Lady Blossom] defeated Kerry Booth via pinfall (0:41 shown)

  • WCW SPECIAL BULLETIN: Tony Schiavone interrupts the match 15 seconds in to announce that RIC FLAIR IS NO LONGER WITH WCW AND A NEW WORLD CHAMPION WILL BE CROWNED NEXT WEEKEND AT THE GREAT AMERICAN BASH. That’s company-shaking news and they announced via awkward sliced in bulletin. What a decision. Also holy sh*t. Obviously I knew it was going to happen, I’ve been cracking jokes about it since the GAB build started but it’s crazy that we’ve made it to this point.

The York Foundation (“The Computerized Man” of the 1990s” Terrance Taylor, Richard Morton, & Mr. Hughes) [w/ Alexandra York] defeated Larry Santo, Jim Boss, & Greg Sawyer via pinfall (3:05)

  • Morton and Taylor handle the bulk of the match, tagging Hughes in at the end so he can show off his power and get the pin with one foot. I dug it.

Paul E. Dangerously hypes up next Sunday’s PPV by announcing four new matches:

  • Dustin Rhodes & The Young Pistols vs. Badstreet & The Fabulous Freebirds in an Elimination Match…not for the Six Man Tag Team Title, I guess
  • Yellow Dog vs. Johnny B. Badd in a Bounty Match for Dog’s mask
  • Bobby Eaton & PN News vs. Steve Austin & Terrance Taylor in a Scaffold Match dubbed “SkyWalker 2”. YOU MOTHERF*CKERS ARE MAKING PN NEWS DO WHAT NOW?
  • Tom Zenk vs. The Diamond Studd

Clip of Studd’s attack on Zenk two weeks ago on World Championship Wrestling. Pre-recorded comments from both men; Studd will drop Z-Man like a bad habit, Z-Man will get revenge for having his clothes ripped off on national TV. Not quite a shampoo commercial-level for a feud but close. Flair vs. Luger is still advertised here, they had time to splice in the bulletin but not enough time to edit the stock GAB Report for the weekend.

The Hardliners (“Dirty” Dick Slater & Dick Murdoch) defeated Pat Rose & Eddie Desmond when Slater made Desmond submit to an armbar (2:06 shown)

  • INSERT PROMO: Rick Steiner vows to give The Hardliners more than they ever asked for.
  • WCW SPECIAL BULLETIN: Schiavone cuts in once again to announce that Ric Flair & WCW have failed to agree to a deal and a new World Champion will be decided next weekend at The Great American Bash.
  • REGULAR ASS ARMBAR wins the match, gotta love it.

-BRICKHOUSE BONUS: Jack Brickhouse talks about the big Great American Bash tour going on across the country, listing off various stops including the UIC Pavilion right here in Chicago. Cool.

-Schavone and Zbyszko talk about various events held in Chicago while out in the city. Zbyszko says there’s nothing quite like Chicago except the air quality of Gary, Indiana. RUDE…I guess. I don’t know much about the Midwest.

One Man Gang [w/ Kevin Sullivan] defeated John Peterson via pinfall with the 747 (1:15)

  • This time Gang is somewhat better prepared to wrestle in a straitjacket, having use of both hands.
  • INSERT PROMO: Gang and Sullivan have some words for El Gigante. They don’t make a lot of sense but they ARE words.
  • POST-MATCH: Gang and Sullivan leave the arena wheeling Peterson along.

-VIDEO: A special look at “The Total Package” Lex Luger one week out from once again challenging for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. He has had opportunities in the past but fate has dealt him a bad hand (HE CHOKED).

Big Josh & “The Z-Man” Tom Zenk defeated Mark Kyle & Tim Frye when Zenk knocked Kyle out with a sleeperhold (2:17)

  • Josh & Zenk are an odd pairing but I’m into it. I’m also into Schiavone & Zbyszko talking about how excited they are for Flair/Luger at the Bash. Ooooof.
  • Big Josh was supposed to feud with Black Blood leading to GAB but I guess they decided to go in another direction (meaning abandon it completely).
  • I doubt Josh & Z-Man are gonna stick as a team but it made for a semi-entertaining way to kill three minutes.

Zbyszko is with Johnny B. Badd and “The Godfather of WCW” Theodore R. Long. Zbyszko says they have a chance to make some big money when Badd goes against The Yellow Dog at Great American Bash. Long says everyone knows Dog is Brian Pillman and Badd is going to lay him out with a left hook so they can collect the bounty. Zbyszko asks Badd about PN News, Badd calls him a “big old ugly bear” (you know, the usual), Long says Badd is the original Rapmaster.

The Diamond Studd [w/ Diamond Dallas Page] defeated Scotty Williams via pinfall with the Diamond Death Drop (1:47 shown)

  • BEFORE THE MATCH: Studd and DDP try out a new Studdette.
  • WCW SPECIAL BULLETIN: Another interruption, another announcement that Ric Flair has not re-signed and a new World Champion will be declared next weekend at The Great American Bash. More info next week.
  • How come DDP doesn’t stay at ringside for The Freebirds’ matches?

-KNOCKSVILLE USA CLIP: Paul E. Dangerously breaks his big ol’ cellphone on the back of Jason Hervey’s head.

-Schiavone is with Hervey’s boyfriend, and Dangerously’s nemesis, Missy Hyatt. Hyatt vows to take care of Dangerously next weekend at The Great American Bash in the mixed six man tag team match.

“Beautiful” Bobby Eaton defeated Allen Martin via pinfall with the Alabama Jam (2:24)

  • Eaton, still mad about losing the TV Title last week, attacks his opponent before the bell and doesn’t let up.

-Schiavone and Zbyszko close the show back on the Chicago streets. Zbyszko challenges the winner of next weekend’s World Title match for a UIC Pavilion show.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Yeah okay fun squashes blah blah BUT HOLY SH*T THAT RIC FLAIR NEWS.
