[TV Rundown] ‘PRO CHICAGO’ 07.13.1991 – Pistols vs. ‘Birds, Hardliners and Others in Action

COMMENTATORS: Tony Schiavone & “The Living Legend” Larry Zbyszko

This week’s Pro features a Bash preview as The Young Pistols take on The Fabulous Freebirds in a Tag Team Elimination match, plus Steve Austin, Johnny B. Badd, and The Hardliners are all in action.

  • WCW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPION: “Stunning” Steve Austin
  • WCW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: The Steiner Brothers (Rick & Scott Steiner)
  • WCW UNITED STATES TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes & Jimmy “Jam” Garvin)
  • WCW WORLD SIX MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes, Jimmy “Jam” Garvin, & Badstreet)

  • Tom Zenk vs. Rip Rogers
  • Steve Austin vs. Chad Floyd
  • Johnny B. Badd vs. Jackie Fulton
  • BRICKHOUSE BONUS w/ Jack Brickhouse
  • One Man Gang vs. Terry Bronson
  • LARRY Z’S LEGENDS w/ Larry Zbyszko & Nikita Koloff
  • The Hardliners vs. Joey Maggs & Ricky Nelson
  • TAG TEAM ELIMINATION: The Young Pistols vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (**)

Jim Herd reads a prepared statement: after extensive contract negotiations, WCW & Ric Flair have been unable to come to terms and the World Heavyweight Championship has been vacated; a new champion will be decided at The Great American Bash with Lex Luger, Flair’s scheduled opponent, taking on Barry Windham, the #2 contender. Herd wishes Flair the best in his future endeavors.

-Schiavone and Zbyszko welcome the home audience via remote from Buckingham Fountain in Chicago. Zbyszko says he’s seen fancier fountains during his travels around the world. Schiavone & Zbyszko take it to a clip of Diamond Studd attacking and stripping Z-Man of his suit.

“The Z-Man” Tom Zenk defeated Rip Rogers via knockout with a sleeperhold (1:58)

  • INSET PROMO: Diamond Studd says Z-Man will see three Ds on Sunday: Diamond Death Drop.
  • Zbyszko hypes Luger/Windham by calling the latter “capable”. HOW EXCITING.
  • A sleeperhold?!? Fair enough. Guess Z-Man didn’t wanna take that missile dropkick bump.

Dangerously hypes Luger/Windham in a Cage Match for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship. This affects the OTHER cage match, as now the six-person contest scheduled originally is a tag team affair as Rick Steiner teams with Missy Hyatt against Arn Anderson & Dangerously. Rest of the card is hyped as well, Richard Morton and Robert Gibson have some comments about their singles match against one another. Comments from Barry Windham who tells Lex Luger to be ready for the battle of his life because he will prove he is the next World Heavyweight Champion.

“Stunning” Steve Austin [w/ Lady Blossom] defeated Chad Floyd via pinfall with a Stun Gun into a faceslam (1:42)

  • INSET PROMO: Bobby Eaton vows to throw Austin off the scaffold tomorrow night.
  • Schiavone questions why Austin would involve himself in a Scaffold Match when his TV Title reign is just starting. He should be asking why WCW is trying to kill one of its most promising young talents after only a month.

Johnny B. Badd [w/ Theodore R. Long] defeated Jackie Fulton via pinfall with a left hook (2:03)

  • INSET PROMO: Badd and Long are going to make PN News pay for putting his hands on the former. It’ll be a blessin’ to teach him a lesson.
  • POST-MATCH: Badd plants a “kiss” (lipstick sticker) on Fulton’s cheek.

-BRICKHOUSE BONUS: Jack Brickhouse hypes tomorrow night’s Great American Bash and Lex Luger in particular, wishing him the best of luck and hoping he can talk about a new World Champion next week. Well I mean technically he can either way.

-Schiavone and Zbyszko talk about El Gigante getting his head shaved by Kevin Sullivan & One Man Gang and take it to a clip…of the post-match attack, not the actual shaving part.

One Man Gang [w/ Kevin Sullivan] defeated Terry Bronson via pinfall with the 747 (1:05)

  • Gang carries a foam mannequin head on a stick with him to the ring, covered with the hair they shaved off El Gigante.
  • POST-MATCH: Big Josh saves Terry Bronson, but ends up getting attacked by Gang and hung in the Tree of Woe. El Gigante, who is COMPLETELY BALD (as opposed to the peach fuzz he was showing last week), finally makes his way out to save his Northwestern friend.

Zbyszko takes it to a clip of Nikita Koloff’s attack on Sting during the last Clash of the Champions event, endangering the health of a young Sting fan. Zbyszko paints it as Koloff trying to “save” the kid from Sting’s evil influence which is certainly one way of looking at it. Back to Zbyszko, who’s now joined by Koloff. Koloff is sick and tired of being asked why he did that to Sting; as far as he is concerned Sting is the reason he’s not the U.S. Champion right now and he’s out for revenge.

  • I appreciate Koloff STILL being mad about not being U.S. Champion yet, keeping that story going by painting Sting as the reason. Does it lead to him ever BECOMING the champ though? Wellllll.

The Hardliners (“Dirty” Dick Slater & Dick Murdoch) defeated “Jumpin” Joey Maggs & Ricky Nelson when Murdoch made Nelson submit to a Fujiwara Armbar (2:58)

The Young Pistols (Tracy Smothers & Steve Armstrong) vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes & Jimmy “Jam” Garvin) [w/ Diamond Dallas Page & “The Road Boss” Big Daddy Dink]

Pistols are teaming with Dustin Rhodes to face the ‘Birds & Badstreet in an Elimination Match tomorrow at The Great American Bash, so this is a warm-up/preview.

Garvin sends Armstrong running, Armstrong connects with the first dropkick but misses the second. Armstrong counters a backdrop with a sunset flip for a two-count then settles into an armbar, preventing Garvin’s attempts to escapes. Ref gets distracted, Smothers phantom tags in to keep the armbar going. Hayes tags in, Garvin fluffs the hair to get him in the zone. Wish someone would do that when I clocked in every day. Pistols hit a double chop, Armstrong gets sent to the floor after Garvin pulls the ropes. Armstrong tries to get back in, Garvin sends him back to the floor with a knee but Dink throws him back in anyway. Armstrong counters a slam with a small package for the 1…2…3! JIMMY GARVIN HAS BEEN ELIMINATED. Hayes runs in, Armstrong tosses him over the top rope and gets DQed. STEVE ARMSTRONG HAS BEEN ELIMINATED. Idiot.

Down to Smothers and Hayes, the former counters a hip toss with a backslide for the 1…2…latter kicks out. Smother ducks an elbow and connects with a sunset flip for the 1…Hayes kicks out again. Smothers catches a kick and spins Hayes around, Hayes connects with a left hook and follows up with a forearm from the top buckle. Hayes drops the elbow, Smothers kicks out at two and Hayes slows it down with a rear chinlock. Smothers fights back with rights and a back elbow off an Irish whip. Smothers blocks the DDT and connects with a flying shoulderblock, Dink distracts the ref and Badstreet runs in for a DDT, Hayes covers for the 1…2…3! TRACY SMOTHERS HAS BEEN ELIMINATED.

The Fabulous Freebirds defeated The Young Pistols (7:21)

  • Once again Badstreet is the difference maker for the Freebirds, giving them the win and the psychological edge going into tomorrow night’s six-man elimination match at the Bash. Can’t say there was anything too super memorable here but it was a breeze to watch so no hate. (**)

-Schiavone and Zbyszko are back at Buckingham Fountain. Next week will be another Bounty Match as Yellow Dog teams with The Z-Man to take on Steve Austin & The Diamond Studd. I think Dog and Z-Man will have some good chemistry together…provided Dog keeps his mask tomorrow night. Comments from both teams, Schiavone reminds everyone to order the Bash tomorrow. Zbyszko thinks PN News could swallow the entire H2O content of the Fountain. Doesn’t sound as insulting as he thinks it is.
