[TV Rundown] ‘World Championship Wrestling’ 06.15.1991 – Knocksville USA Clip Show, Six Man Tag Team Action

This week’s World Championship Wrestling is more of a clip show as Ross breaks down the happenings from last Wednesday’s Knocksville USA. We do get a couple of original matches though, including The Fabulous Freebirds making their first appearance as Six Man Tag Team Champs…despite not having won them yet.

  • WCW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPION: “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton

  • WCW UNITED STATES TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes & Jimmy “Jam” Garvin)

  • COTC CLIP: Lex Luger vs. Great Muta
  • Tom Zenk vs. Randy Barber
  • COTC CLIP: Sting vs. Nikita Koloff
  • COTC CLIP: Dangerously & Hervey
  • COTC CLIP: Gigante/Pillman vs. Anderson/Windham
  • COTC CLIP: Steiners vs. Chono & Hase; Hardliners post-match attack
  • PROMO: The Hardliners
  • COTC CLIP: Lex Luger vs. The Great Muta
  • COTC CLIP: Ric Flair vs. Bobby Eaton
  • COTC CLIP: Nikita Koloff attacks Sting
  • Dustin Rhodes & The Young Pistols vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (*3/4)

-COTC CLIP: Lex Luger battles The Great Muta for the #1 Contendership.

-Ross welcomes the home audience while holding a clipboard for some reason. Looks like we’re getting all sorts of Knocksville USA clips/recaps.

“The Z-Man” Tom Zenk defeated Randy Barber via pinfall with a missile dropkick (2:09)

  • Ross insinuates a feud is brewing between The Z-Man and The Diamond Studd for REASONS.
  • Either the stairs are on camera or we’ve got some EMPTY ass bleachers this week. I wanna believe it’s the former.
  • Zenk’s dainty superkick never fails to make me laugh.

Paul E. Dangerously announces the main event: Lex Luger will challenge Ric Flair for the World Title in a Steel Cage match. Words from Flair, weirdo “Secret” vision board stuff from Luger.

-COTC CLIP: Sting beats Nikita Koloff via roll-up.

-POST-MATCH COMMENTS: Sting isn’t finished yet with Koloff, vowing to beat his buns raw. Ew.

-Ross says Dangerously is missing from this week’s show as he’s in a conference with VP Jim Herd.

-COTC CLIP: Paul E. Dangerously breaks his cell phone over Jason Hervey’s head. Ross cuts in and says something has to be done with Dangerously and Hyatt to resolve their adolescent issues.

The Desperados are up to no good in Ghost Town. I am NOT recapping that motherf*cking thing again, sorry. Check out the other reports from this weekend’s shows to catch up.

-COTC CLIP: Arn Anderson & Barry Windham defeat Brian Pillman & El Gigante; Pillman takes the pinfall and must now leave WCW (and buy tickets to the show instead). Ross mentions that someone called “The Yellow Dog” has picked up Pillman’s contracts. Interesssssssting.

-COMING ATTRACTIONS: Johnny B. Badd is the prettiest wrestler in WCW and has a mean left hook to boot.

-COTC CLIP: Steiner Bros. retain the IWGP Tag Team Titles over Masahiro Chono & Hiroshi Hase, The Hardliners (“Dirty” Dick Murdoch & “Also Dirty I Guess” Dick Slater) attack The Steiners after the match.

-BACKSTAGE PROMO: The Hardliners are out for blood, money, and the World Tag Team Championship. Dick Slater wears the boot he used on The Steiners over his right hand like a crazy person. If this match actually happens on TV or PPV I will be VERY excited; if it’s house show-only I’m going to…do nothing about it because it’s almost 30 years later.

-COMING ATTRACTIONS: Black Blood. Helpfully he says his own name so I know how to pronounce it. I thought it was “BLORK BLAWD”.

-Next segment focuses on the World Heavyweight Championship scene, with Ric Flair scheduled to defend against Lex Luger at The Great American Bash after the events that happened at Knocksville U.S.A.

-COTC CLIP: Lex Luger defeats The Great Muta to become #1 contender.

-COTC CLIP: Ric Flair retains the World Title against Bobby Eaton in a 2 out of 3 Falls Match.

-POST-MATCH COMMENTS: Lex Luger celebrates his win and talks about blocking The Great Muta’s mist. Great American Bash will be the biggest match of his career, and has a different feeling going into this one.

-POST-MATCH COMMENTS: Ric Flair vows to be around for a long, long time and will retain the World Title against Lex Luger. Both of these are incorrect.

-COTC CLIP: Nikita Koloff attacks Sting as he celebrates with the winner of the lookalike contest. They will face each other in a Texas Death Match at next weekend’s big event at the Omni. BOOOOO.

-GREAT AMERICAN BASH VIDEO: PN News raps about some of the folks expected on the show. It’s great. PN News is the greatest rapper of our lifetime.

“The Natural” Dustin Rhodes & The Young Pistols (Tracy Smothers & Steve Armstrong) vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael “P.S.” Hayes, Jimmy “Jam” Garvin, & Badstreet) [w/ Diamond Dallas Page & Big Daddy Dink]

Badstreet & The ‘Birds are the new WCW World Six Man Tag Team Champions, having defeated Junkyard Dog & Tommy Rich in a handicap match to win them (Ricky Morton didn’t participate for obvious reasons). According to a quick Google search the title change isn’t set to air until June 30th…but here we are. They even have belts! Good for them.

Hayes shows off some dance moves, while Rhodes looks on in disgust. He’s just mad he can’t moonwalk. Finally they lock up, Rhodes grabs a side headlock. Atomic drop, Hayes gets bounced around like a pinball then embraces Garvin for a moment to get that GAY PANIC HEAT and “F*GGOT” chants. Ughhhhhhhhh. Rhodes grabs an armbar, Hayes whips him off but gets sent to the mat with a hip toss and complains to the ref of a tight pull. Natural is too nice to do that. Smothers tags in and continues working Hayes’ left arm, Garvin tags in and runs right into an armdrag, Smothers settling into an armbar. Corner break, Garvin fluffs his hair and does some strutting of his own. Garvin takes Smothers to the mat with a waistlock, Smothers connects with a hip toss to both Freebirds, Badstreet staying on the apron like the smart wrestler he is. Garvin almost gets pinned off a roll-up and argues with the ref to count “correctly” (i.e. slower). Garvin brings Smothers to the mat with a snapmare and covers, ref counts slower as asked so Smothers kicks out and The Freebirds corner him, telling him to count FAST. Smothers catches Garvin with a sunset flip for the 1…2…Garvin kicks out, they argue AGAIN with the ref about the speed of the count.

Garvin wants Armstrong and he tags in with glee. Garvin drives a series of knees to the breadbasket, Armstrong counters a whip and connects with backdrop followed by a dropkick and Garvin bails to the floor. Hayes tags back in and tries to get the crowd behind them, but they boo instead of clap. Rhodes & Pistols clap their hands and the crowd gets behind them instead. Hayes tries a sunset flip, Armstrong fights out with a series of rights. Hayes wanders into the wrong corner, eats some rights, gets felled by a dropkick, and calls for a time out. Badstreet wants in, Hayes says not yet. Hayes misses an elbow, Armstrong with a crossbody for the 1…2…Hayes kicks out, back into the armbar. Hayes asks for Smothers, who tags in, as the stalling continues. Y’all wanna have a match or not? Garvin finally gets a tag and kicks Smothers, Hayes follows with a left hook. Badstreet tags in for the first time, leapfrogs and a clothesline. Badstreet takes flight with a double axhandle to the back of Smothers’ head followed by a hangman’s neckbreaker. Smothers tossed to the floor, Big Daddy Dink gets in a clothesline while the ref is distracted. Smothers tries to re-enter, Garvin kicks him off and into the guardrail for more cheapshots. Back in the ring Garvin tags in and applies a reverse chinlock. Smothers breaks out, both men collide and fall to the mat.

Hayes tags in but so does Rhodes, and the Natural is a house of fire. Lariat to Hayes, double noggin knocker for the ‘Birds. Badstreet attacks from behind and holds Rhodes, Hayes accidentally hits him with a left hook. Rhodes connects with a Bulldog for the 1…Richard Morton runs in and attacks Rhodes, leading to a DQ.

Dustin Rhodes & The Young Pistols defeated The Fabulous Freebirds via DQ (16:26)

  • All that stalling and padding for a run-in DQ finish. Tremendous. Match did NOT need to be that long as not much happened but I did appreciate the crowd (and ref) work done by The Freebirds here and there. Badstreet not getting super involved keeps him mysterious for the time being, their secret weapon (who looks like a goober). I can’t believe they aired this one like two weeks before the Six Man Titles even change hands on TV. (*3/4)

Rhodes & Pistols clear the ring, Rhodes talking trash at Morton.

-Ross signs off, hyping tomorrow’s Main Event.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Fine for a clip show, though the two fresh matches they tacked on were not worth writing home about (and also out of order). As someone who watched Knocksville USA this didn’t do anything for me, and seeing The Freebirds hold Six Man Tag Team gold out of nowhere threw me for a loop.
