[TV Rundown] ‘Worldwide’ 06.08.1991 – SuperBrawl Rematch, Rhodes/Eaton vs. Taylor/Anderson

COMMENTATORS: Tony Schiavone & Gordon Solie

Two feature matches this week on Worldwide as Dustin Rhodes & Bobby Eaton take on Terrence Taylor & Arn Anderson and Tommy Rich tries to avenge his Superbrawl loss against Nikita Koloff. It goes really well for him. No it doesn’t.

“The Natural” Dustin Rhodes & “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton [w/ Ricky Morton] vs. “The Computerized Man of the 1990s” Terrence Taylor & “The Enforcer” Arn Anderson [w/ Alexandra York & Mr. Hughes]

Rhodes & Eaton once again have Morton by their side because they’re f*cking IDIOTS. For a second I thought this was recycled from last week’s Power Hour but I guess this is somewhat different. I should probably stop taking months-long breaks between these recaps, huh?

Anderson trash talks and slaps Rhodes, Taylor hits him from behind. Rhodes reverses an Irish whip, Eaton hits HIM from behind and soon enough the faces clear the ring of the heels as the crowd goes wild. Anderson clears Eaton off the ring and rolls out to avoid Rhodes, only to eat a hook from the Beautiful One. HE PLAYED HIMSELF. Eaton rolls Anderson into the ring, Anderson quickly escapes to his corner and tags out to Taylor. Taylor grabs a hammerlock, Rhodes escapes with a back elbow and takes him to the mat with a side headlock. Eaton tags in and “rakes” Taylor’s eyes across the ring (his hand is very visibly in the way). Atomic drop into Rhodes for an elbow, Eaton follows up with a clothesline and a right hand that sends him FLYING across the ring. Great sell. Rhodes backs Taylor into the ropes, Taylor connects with a cheapshot right hand and follows up with a jawbreaker. Anderson tags in and goes to work until he misses a corner splash, allowing Rhodes to hit some count-a-long rights. Rhodes drops Taylor with a right hand, Eaton tags in and connects with a series of rights, Anderson counters a backdrop attempt with a Ghordbuster.

Taylor tags in and connects with a gutwrench sit-out power bomb but Bill Alfonso takes too long to make the count so he kicks out. Eaton rolls Taylor up, Anderson distracts Alfonso so the count can’t be made. Taylor goes back to the attack and settles into a chinlock. York and Hughes walk over to talk with Morton, Rhodes gets in Morton’s face about it and Anderson attacks him. Ricky Morton BAILS ONCE AGAIN (I’m shocked). Eaton sets up for the Alabama Jam, Hughes hits him from behind with his gloved hand and Taylor covers for the 1…2…3.

Terrence Taylor & Arn Anderson defeated Dustin Rhodes & Bobby Eaton via pinfall (6:53)

  • Taylor & Anderson avenge their loss from last week while Morton does the same thing he’s been doing for like seventy years (or weeks, I don’t know, time is a construct) to slow burn the heel turn. It was fine. I’m numb to these matches, man. (**)

Rhodes enters the ring, York FAINTS in his arms. He gently puts her down, Hughes drops Rhodes with a gloved right. Hughes picks her up and brings her to the back, JUMPING OFF THE APRON WITH HER IN HIS ARMS. Boy she’s lucky his balance was on point for that one.

“The Rapmaster” PN News defeated Greg Sawyer via pinfall with the Broken Record (0:51)

-VIDEO: The Desperados arrive in “Ghost Town”, folks scurrying away to avoid them. They hitch their horses and walk as a cohesive unit towards a random man (maybe the Sheriff?) for a duel. Video ends before we get to witness a murder though, that’s a bummer.

The Steiner Brothers (Rick & Scott Steiner) defeated Tim Frye & Rob Morgan via pinfall when Scott Steiner pinned Frye following a Doomsday Bulldog (2:48)

  • Frye and Morgan are both very skinny, making them perfect tackling dummies for The Steiners. I feel like I shouldn’t be this excited to watch people get the sh*t kicked out of them but who doesn’t love a Steiners squash?
  • Solie says The Steiners aren’t “vindictive”, proving he’s never actually paid attention to their squashes. You’d think their opponents owed them money or something.

-VIDEO: Highlights of the Sting/Nikita Koloff feud. These two will do battle at Knocksville U.S.A. in a few days time. Comments from Sting, who LOVES THE HEAT.

“Wildfire” Tommy Rich vs. “The Russian Nightmare” Nikita Koloff

We got us a SuperBrawl rematch! Koloff in control early, working Rich over in the corner with shoulders to the midsection. Rich catches a charging Koloff with a boot and follows up with a wristlock, twisting and wrenching it. Koloff whips him off and counters a crossbody attempt with a slam. Rich dodges an elbowdrop and goes back to the wristlock. “LUGER” chants from the crowd because they’re not letting go of that feud they’ve received no payoff on yet. I don’t blame them. Rich misses a dropkick, Koloff clobbers him with repeated forearms across the back after choking him on the top rope. Koloff fights off a comeback attempt and goes back to illegal heel tactics, throwing in an eye rake for flavor. Rich connects with a series of rights, Koloff reverses an Irish whip and connects with a Russian Sickle for the 1…2…3.

Nikita Koloff defeated Tommy Rich via pinfall (2:57)

  • Essentially a squash win for Koloff but against a bigger name guy so it matters more. Okay a bigger name guy he already beat on PPV but it still counts. Not much to rate so I won’t. (NR)

“Flyin” Brian Pillman defeated Doug Gilbert via pinfall with a tope-rope flying crossbody (2:48)

  • FUN SPOT: Gilbert tries to escape Pillman by sitting on the top turnbuckle, Pillman shows off his great hops by dropkicking him to the floor.

One Man Gang [w/ Kevin Sullivan] defeated Dave Johnson via pinfall with the 747 (1:33)

  • POST-MATCH: Gang continues beating up Johnson, even as Sullivan tries to pull him away with a dog collar/chain. Sullivan finally jumps on him outside the ring to calm him down.

-RINGSIDE INTERVIEW: After a break Schiavone is standing by with One Man Gang and Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan says everybody is afraid of something no matter the person’s size. Sullivan says they recently traveled to South America to meet with the lady of the third eye who told them everything about El Gigante. Sullivan says the DAHKNESS will fall upon El Gigante soon, d00d.

Barry Windham defeated Ian Weston via pinfall with the Superplex (1:49)

  • Midway through the match a man in a gorilla costume comes to ringside to goof around with the fans and annoy Windham, climbing the apron and everything.
  • POST-MATCH: The gorilla attacks Windham, connecting with a clothesline and stealing his boot. Deja vu. And I guess that’s also the end of the show!
